I'm Batman?

I've been working on a magazine illustration. I had an art director ask me to pitch him an idea for a spot illustration, for a single page article titled "Bipolar Batman."

Hamster eats pencils!

Here are last weeks best warm-up sketches. HammStarr ended up being way tougher than I thought. I didn't like any of the sketches that went too far from the worried look, but he can't be worried all they time or can he? Better to work out issues in sketches before wasting time working out design issues in panels while trying to draw the actual comics. It wastes materials, time and kills momentum. Expressionism

Today's warm-up sketch was Pleco the fish. The duck was tough. But not a lot to work with there either. I think the fish and the duck will be fun to draw in some situations, trying to figure out just the right way to convey certain emotions with fins and beaks, and very little human features to use other than their eyes. At least with the lead character, a Hamster there's a mouth in the equation.

Meanwhile back on the drawing board...

It was a pretty busy summer, and I'm just now getting back to my illustration projects, which are all way behind schedule. I started out today getting back to a daily warm-up sketch, which helps me a lot! I'm trying to finish a comic book story for a charity anthology, but for the next few weeks in an effort to get back on schedule and get all the preliminary character designs and whatnot all completed, the morning warm-ups will all be characters and elements from a comic strip I'm developing.

Today was some facial expressions for Quark the Space Duck...

coveralls

More warm-up sketches. Working out the look for an All-terrain Robot Scout Vehicle that gets converted into a prosthetic body for a fish. For tomorrow I'm thinkin' more Dinosaurs! Click on the images for a closer look!

Book marks: Part 3

I'm doing an experiment within the boundaries of my daily warm-up sketch. I'm researching some of favorite panels and compositions from old comics and cartoon shows, interpreting them all in a hard bound sketchbook. Creating a reference book, as well as hopefully, a fun learning experience. So far so good, here are a few more days worth of sketches...

Story boarding

I'm working on thumbnail layouts for the Dragon book project today, so I thought I'd make my warm-up sketches today, thumbnail layouts as well. Mostly referencing some stuff from cartoons and even a quick one page story. I've been in a Superman mood. I just got the second season DVD of the Salkind's syndicated Superboy TV series. Looking forward to popping that in while at the drawing board later.
