Ten thousand maniacs

Welcome back to my sketch blog. It's been a while since I've posted anything.

I took some time off to regroup and regain some focus, after among other things, a series of wacky set-backs, false starts,  and several months of paranoid, harassment and unfounded legal accusations from a bat-shit insane, delusional off-his-meds, internet wacko. Which really took the fun out of projects that were supposed to be fun.

So here we are nearly a year later, ready to get back to work, all focused and whatnot, dusting off my drawing board...

Awesome I missed a milestone while I was gone, a few months back my deviantArt page went over 10,235 Pageviews. Woohoo!

Also, here is a sketch from part of a logo I'm working on, more to come soon...

Dork Knight

I've been working on a magazine illustration. I had an art director ask me to pitch him an idea for a spot illustration, for a single page article titled "Bipolar Batman."

Dramatic hamster

Here are last weeks warm-up sketches. HammStarr's facial expressions ended up being way tougher than I thought. I didn't like any of the sketches that went too far from the worried look, but he can't be worried all they time or can he?  Click on the images for a closer look!

Fish eye lens

Today's warm-up sketch was Pleco the fish. The duck was tough. But not a lot to work with there either. I think the fish and the duck will be fun to draw in some situations, trying to figure out just the right way to convey certain emotions with fins and beaks, and very little human features to use other than their eyes. At least with the lead character, a Hamster there's a mouth in the equation.

Duck seasoning...

It was a pretty busy summer, and I'm just now getting back to a daily warm-up sketch, for the next while, the morning warm-ups will all be all characters and incidental elements from a comic strip I'm working on.

Today was some facial expressions for Quark the Space Duck...

Book marks: Part 3

I'm doing an experiment within the boundaries of my daily warm-up sketch. I'm researching some of favorite panels and compositions from old comics and cartoon shows, interpreting them all in a hard bound sketchbook. Creating a reference book, as well as hopefully, a fun learning experience. So far so good, here are a few more days worth of sketches...

Story boarding

I'm working on thumbnail layouts for the Dragon book project today, so I thought I'd make my warm-up sketches today, thumbnail layouts as well. Mostly referencing some stuff from cartoons and even a quick one page story. I've been in a Superman mood. I just got the second season DVD of the Salkind's syndicated Superboy TV series. Looking forward to popping that in while at the drawing board later.
